Orton-Gillingham Phonics
Orton-Gillingham is a structured and multi-sensory approach to teaching that was developed by a neurologist (Dr. Samuel T. Orton) and an educator (Anna Gillingham). Orton-Gillingham is a method or way of teaching that relies on direct instruction of the structure of language. It begins very simply by teaching the sound/symbol relationships of letters with sounds. As students are learning the concepts get more complex. Each lesson plan has 5 components which is introduced to students using a multi-sensory (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) approach to teaching concepts.
Research from the National Reading Panel founded that students must be taught the following in order to be a good reader:
- Phonemic awareness skills (ability to hear, identify & manipulate sounds)
- Phonics skills (the relationship between letters and sounds)
- Fluency skills (accuracy, speed, and expression)
- Application of reading comprehension strategies
